Location Sound for Film

Two scenarios exist for Film sound. The first and most common is:
Location Recording This consists of the proper sound gear and personnel for Dialog and Effects recording necessary for 95% of all film shoots. The second scenario Playback for Music Videos, consists of a sync-recorder with slate as well as a speaker system for the talent to hear the pre-recorded "track". The speaker system can be as small as a single wireless earpiece, as large as a full concert sound PA system, or anything in between. Producers should determine with the artist, in advance, which scenario applies for any given project.

Recordist Package: (for interviews, documentaries, features, commercials, etc…)

Fostex PD-4 Time Code DAT Recorder, Ambient "Smart Slate" with wireless Time Code, 2) Lectrosonics UCR 201 UHF wireless w/Tram lavaliers, Sennheiser MKH-60 or 416 shotgun mic w/boom pole & zeppelin with fuzzy, Sony MDR-7506 stereo headphones. 2) Wireless headsets (for Director and/or Script Supervisor), Sound cart, Bullhorn, batteries, miscellaneous cables, adaptors, etc.

Documentary Style – Single man operation (sound recordist w/gear)

Feature Style – (sound recordist and boom operator w/gear)

$1,300.00 / 12 hours

Many producers choose Documentary Style sound in order to streamline the shoot (and the budget!). However this single man operation, where the recordist must operate the recorder, hold the boom and also deal with radio mics, typically prevents the taking of sound notes, and may cause short delays especially if your schedule is tight. It is therefore recommended to go Feature Style, with a dedicated boom operator, for all but the most streamlined documentary shoots. The sound department will be happier and you'll usually get a much better soundtrack.
